Diving

One thing Marseille offers in abundance is water, and those keen to explore the ocean bed of the Calanques can arrange to be accompanied by a state-qualified instructor. The best time for diving is between June and September – it’s hardly on a par with the Seychelles, but for those keen to get some scuba experience in a safe environment, it represents a good option.

Sailing

The coastal regions around Marseille are some of the most attractive in France, making exploration by sailboat a hugely popular option. As well as the craggy cliffs and quiet bays of the Iles de Frioul just offshore, the much celebrated beaches of the south of France of legend are close by too. Yacht charter is available, although be aware it’s not especially cheap.

Cycling

Marseille’s bike-hire scheme has proved popular since its launch, and for visitors to the city it gives the option not just of freewheeling their way through the more picturesque urban pockets but for heading further afield and taking in the postcard views of the coastal roads. The machines require credit-card details when you first hire a bike but only charges an hourly fee of €1.

Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts are well catered for in Marseille, with dedicated excursions on offer supplying full equipment and departures from the Vieux Port in the heart of the city. The rainbow of different seafood on offer each morning at the outdoor market will give you a good idea of what kind of fish you should expect to catch.

Cooking lessons

The Miramar restaurant on the Vieux Port is arguably the most famous in Marseille, enjoying particular renown for its bouillabaisse. Those keen to get as familiar as possible with Marseille’s most famous dish can join a cookery course at the Miramar, in which one of the head chefs takes participants through the step-by-step process of preparing it to restaurant standard.
