Antica Locanda dei Mercanti
Fourteen individually decorated rooms make up this bijou hideaway - an oasis of tranquillity just a stone's throw from Milan's top tourist attractions. Here, there are few concessions to technology, with books and fresh flowers replacing TVs and modems. Four rooms have terraces, and there is a choice of smaller rooms and suites. All are decorated in beautifully muted style, some with contemporary four posters. There is no restaurant, but continental breakfast can be served in the room.
Carlton Hotel Baglioni

Le Méridien Gallia
Situated close to Milan's main station and built in art nouveau style, the Gallia's interior of glass and ironwork echoes the sleek ocean liners of the 1930s. First opened in 1932, the hotel boasts 237 rooms and suites, a gourmet restaurant, excellent health spa facilities and a business centre.
Park Hyatt Milan
Now well established on the Milan hotel scene is the Park Hyatt Milan, which enjoys an enviable location sandwiched between the refurbished La Scala opera house and the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II, just off the city's main square and the Duomo. The hotel was fashioned by the seminal designer Ed Tuttle, who helped rejuvenate the original 1870s palazzo.
Seven Stars Galleria
In addition to one of the city's best addresses, just a stone's throw from the Duomo, this Leading Small Hotels of the World member is Europe's first 7-star hotel, and also offers guests a personal butler service and a choice of seven contemporary suites overlooking the Galleria.
Straf
Staying at this Milan design hotel is like staying in a contemporary work of art, with 64 individually styled rooms that make the most of texture and colour. This sensual approach extends into the wellbeing rooms, which offer aromatherapy and chromotherapy treatments. Straf also boasts a small gym and a first-class location just opposite the Duomo. For a real treat, book the Executive Room whose terraces overlook the cathedral's spires.
