Hotels in Mongolia
Hotels in Mongolia are mostly found in Ulaanbaatar, where there are several large offerings to choose from. Most are locally owned and operated, although as Mongolia increases in popularity international chains such as Shangri-La and Hilton are planning to open in Ulaanbaatar. There are also many smaller hotels of varying standards. Outside the capital, hotels are basic and few in number.
Grading: There is currently no official grading system for accommodation in Mongolia.
Camping in Mongolia is one of the best ways to experience the country and there are numerous tourist ger camps spread throughout the countryside. The camping accommodation in Mongolia is in gers (round felt tents used by nomadic herders). In most cases, there are also restaurants, bars, toilets and showers. Ger camps are usually open from May to October. Tourists with their own tents have the opportunity to camp almost anywhere they want in Mongolia, although there are restrictions in protected areas and it is advisable to avoid settlements.
Backpacking in Mongolia is popular and there are numerous backpacker hostels and guest houses in Ulaanbaatar. All are locally owned and operated. Most offer additional services such as guided trips to the countryside and visa assistance.
