Taking place the night before Independence Day, La Noche de la Nostalgia celebrates music and culture from the past. Some bars and clubs hold 'anti-nostalgia' parties.

Montevideo's exuberant Carnaval brings dancing, drumming, comedy and theatre to the streets for several weeks each summer. Especially noteworthy are the competitions between neighbourhood Carnaval societies held in the Teatro de Verano and the all-night parade called Desfile de las Llamadas, which moves to the beat of Afro-Uruguayan candombe drumming.

Offerings of flowers, gifts, perfume and rice are made to the Yoruba Goddess of the Sea every 2 February.

Rodeos, barbecues and folk music celebrate the rugged Gaucho lifestyle of Uruguay's rural population who once a year descend upon Montevideo to show the city population what life in the interior is like. Of particular note are cowboy displays of horse riding as well as practical demonstartions of the skills they use to survive out on the range.
