The Montevideo restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over Ur$600)
Moderate (Ur$200 to Ur$600)

These Montevideo restaurant prices are for a three-course meal with half a bottle of house wine or cheapest equivalent per person, including service charges and taxes.

Tandory

Price: Moderate

In the upscale neighbourhood of Pocitos, this is one of the few restaurants in Montevideo serving really fine Asian food. The atmosphere is intimate and elegant and there are vegetarian versions of most dishes available.

Address: Libertad 2855, Pocitos, Montevideo, Uruguay
Telephone: (02) 709 6616.

Arcadia

Price: Expensive

The rooftop restaurant of the Radisson Victoria Plaza Hotel is a sparkling space decorated with crystal chandeliers and soft furnishings imported from Italy. Some may find it a little chintzy but the menu is adventurous and international, while views of the bay and hills around Montevideo are breathtaking.

Address: Plaza Independencia 759, Montevideo, Uruguay
Telephone: (02) 902 0111.

Che Montevideo

Price: Moderate

Riverside dining with both indoor and outdoor tables is on offer at Che Montevideo, where traditional Uruguayan food is served with style and care. Stop by for snacks and beers in the afternoon, or indulge in a gourmet meal in the evening.

Address: Rambla M Gandhi 630, Montevideo, Uruguay
Telephone: (02) 710 6941.

El Fogón

Price: Cheap

At the bargain end of the scale, this traditional grill house serves sizeable steaks with chips, as well as local chicken and fish dishes. The efficient service draws city centre workers for lunch, and the place gets crowded again late in the evening.

Address: San José 1080, Montevideo, Uruguay
Telephone: (02) 900 0900.

Estrecho

Price: Moderate

With a name meaning ‘narrow’ you know this isn't going to be a huge dining hall, but pull up a stool at the bar and enjoy some of the best ‘Nouveau Uruguayan’ cuisine around. And save room for one of their wonderful homemade desserts. At the time of writing, it was open for lunch only.

Address: Sarandí 460, Montevideo, Uruguay
Telephone: (02) 915 6107.

Mercado del Puerto

Price: Cheap

In the atrium of the 19th-century port market are several informal restaurants, open for lunch but not for dinner. Locals love the atmosphere and recommend typical Uruguayan beef cuts cooked on the asado (grill).

Address: Piedras 237, Montevideo, Uruguay
