Restaurants in Mumbai

Visitors who like their food will love Mumbai. Almost everything is on the menu here from American burgers and Japanese sushi to Goan curries, Keralan thalis and Mangalorean seafood. Mumbai is also home to some of India's best restaurants although not all of these are easy on the wallet.

Upmarket eateries boast wine, beer and anything else you might wish to drink but as with the rest of India, imported alcohol comes at a price. Both Indian wine and beer are readily available. Cheaper restaurants generally don't serve alcohol owing to expensive liquor licences.

The restaurants below have been grouped into three different pricing categories:
Expensive (over Rs3,000)
Moderate (Rs1,000 to Rs3,000)
Cheap (up to Rs1,000)
These prices are for a meal for two with wine or beer (where sold), including taxes.

Swati Snacks

Price: Cheap

This small, bustling cafeteria-type restaurant receives rave reviews for its traditional Gujarati food. Some of their specialities include dal dhoki , a sweet Gujarati dal, and bhelpuri panki chatni , a savoury pancake steamed in a banana leaf. Just make sure to leave room for desert, as their homemade ice creams are fantastic. No bookings so be prepared to wait.

The restaurant is basic but the food is simple, delicious and very cheap.

It's only open for dinner and you can either grab your food to go or sit at one of the packed street-side tables.

Trishna

Price: Moderate

Tucked away on a back street in the Fort area is what many local (and visiting) foodies promise is the best seafood restaurant in town. Trishna specialises in Mangalorean seafood dishes and its signature dish, butter pepper garlic king crab, is every bit as delicious as it sounds. Try also the pomfret hyderabadi and the (incredibly spicy) kolhapuri prawns. Trishna is popular with Mumbai's 'in' crowd so you can people-watch while you wait for your order.

Gaylord

Price: Moderate

Excellent north-Indian dishes are served at the long-standing Gaylord restaurant that's as famous for its ostentatious dining room as it is its food. The décor is very much Raj-era pizzazz with additional flourishes such as the tuxedo-wearing waiters only adding to the over-the-top finish. There's an outdoor seating area, separated from the street traffic, and a quieter indoor air-conditioned section better suited for conversation.

Wasabi , in the Taj Hotel, is the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Mumbai and is presided over by Chef Masaharu Morimoto from New York's Nobu restaurant. Not surprisingly, the food is excellent. With Chilean sea bass, Oyster foie gras and superb sushi on the menu, dining at this swish restaurant doesn't come cheap. But once you've tasted the Wasabi crème brulée, you won't care what the bill comes to.
