As the self-styled safari capital of Africa, Nairobi is a great starting point for a quest to spot the African big five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Snap most of these impressive creature within a few kilometres of the centre at Nairobi National Park, or roam further afield into the spectacular Maasai Mara National Reserve. Other top parks around the capital include Amboseli National Park, Hell’s Gate National Park and vast Tsavo National Park, which sprawls on both sides of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The best of the many, many safari agencies in Nairobi are members of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO),and accreditation from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association is also a recognised mark of quality.
