Getting around Naples

Public transport:

Naples's public transport system includes metro, tram, bus, suburban trains and funicular. Metropolitana (tel: 800 56 88 66; www.metro.na.it) runs the city's two metro lines and also the three funiculars up and down the city's steep hills. Azienda Napoletana Mobilita (tel: 081 763 1111 or 800 639 525; www.anm.it) operates most of the city's buses and two tram lines.

The Unico Napoli ticket is valid for 90 minutes on all public transport within the city. It is also possible to buy a pass for 24 hours and 72 hours.

Taxis:

Taxi drivers in Naples have a reputation for tricking tourists into paying higher fares. The best advice is to avoid unofficial taxis and insist that the meter is turned on before setting off. Official taxis are white and can be found at taxi stands in the main piazza. You cannot flag them down. To prebook a taxi, call Napoli (tel: 081 556 4444), Cotana (tel: 081 570 7070) or Partenope (tel: 081 556 0202).

Driving:

Roads in the historic centre are narrow, cobbled and often congested. At least that’s when they are open to non-resident traffic (outside the hours of 0800 and 1830).

Blue markings denote pay-and-display parking. Buy tickets at the meter or in the nearest tobacconist. Elsewhere parking is often overseen by informal parking attendants who expect a small tip for ‘watching’ your car. The 24-hour car park is located west of the city on Via Brin.

Car hire:

Cars can be hired at the airport, railway station and hotels. To hire a car you need to be over 21 and require a credit card and an EU driving licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Providers include Avis (tel: 081 780 5790; www.avis.com), Europcar (tel: 081 780 5643; www.europcar.it), Hertz (tel: 081 780 2971; www.hertz.com) and Maggiore (tel: 081 780 3011; www.maggiore.it).

Bicycle hire:

In a city where almost every road rule is ignored, cycling is not recommended.
