Things to do in New York City

Hiking

New York is very much a walking city and ripe for urban hiking, but if you want to surround yourself with nature, then head to Central Park. The park has several rambling/hiking tours - these are mostly on paved trails, but it’s still a chance to feel removed from the clamour of the city.

Sailing

Local sailing schools offer the chance to admire New York from out on the water. Manhattan Sailing School offers basic courses and boat charters in the city, while out on scenic Long Island, the New York Sailing School has a good selection programmes and vessels.

Climbing

New York has a number of indoor climbing walls for those that like to wrestle with overhangs as opposed to hangovers. Some of the main ones include The Sports Center Climbing Wall, which has a 46-ft (14-metre) high wall, and Manhattan Plaza Health Club Climbing Wall, where there is 5,000 square feet (1,524 square metres) of climbing surface with over 60 routes.

Kayaking

New York is surrounded by water, and getting out there under your own steam makes for an adventurous alternative to harbour tours. The New York Kayak Company has kayaks for hire from Pier 40 in Manhattan’s Hudson River Park, and the Manhattan Kayak Company runs group tours ranging from one-hour tasters to advanced courses of up to 80 km (50 miles) per day.

Ice skating

In winter months, ice skating in New York is incredibly popular. The Rockefeller Centre is the most famous rink, and is open right through to early April. The rink in Central Park is also much-visited. If the weather is less than ideal, Riverside Park on the Hudson River at 142nd Street has a covered rink.
