New cultural quest among adventure travellers
16 November 2009Adventure travellers are seeking more than just high adrenalin thrills when they go on holiday, according to a new report.
More and more adventure holidaymakers are driven by the desire for new experiences, such as interacting with local cultures, learning about their destination and environment, as well as the opportunity to do physical challenges.
This is reflected by a growing demand for volunteer-based tourism, and travel to destinations offering “authentic, un-manufactured ” experiences, according to a survey by specialist operators.
Other popular, activity-driven adventure holidays include: caving, mountain climbing, bird-watching, backpacking, camping, cycling, diving, rafting, skiing and surfing.
In 2009, it is estimated that adventure travellers numbered 78 million from Europe; six million from North America and almost 10 million from South America.
Mexico, Australia, Spain, Canada, Brazil and the UK were among the top adventure travel destinations.
