Political Unrest

Violent protests in Budapest

(20 September 2006)

Violent protests have taken place over two different nights in Budapest. More than 50 people were injured and 100 arrested during the second night of violence on Tuesday in the Hungarian capital.

Police were on horseback, wielding batons, or used tear gas and water cannons to disperse rioters demanding the resignation of the Socialist prime minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany.

The UK Foreign Office advises that the situation is now calm but visitors are recommended to avoid political demonstrations and large crowds assembled for political purposes.
