Political Unrest

Coup in Bangkok

(20 September 2006)

A political coup emerged in Thailand on Tuesday following months of growing tension against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, with protests and a general election annulled due to concerns about its legitimacy.

Tanks are now converging on the streets of Bangkok, but Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) members in Thailand are advising that so far there have been no outbreaks of violence, and that travel and tourism facilities and services are currently operating normally.

The UK Foreign Office advises tourists to avoid large crowds and demonstrations and said that anyone planning to fly to Thailand should keep a close eye on developments and keep in touch with their travel agent or airline. Visitors in Bangkok are also advised not to take any photos of military.
