Beirut airport closed following Israeli attacks

(13 July 2006)

Beirut airport, Lebanon's only international airport, has been closed following Israeli air attacks overnight.

Both runways have been damaged.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently advising against all travel to areas of southern Lebanon south of a line between Tyre and Marjayoun. This follows the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers on the Israel-Lebanon border yesterday.

The FCO expects to issue an update to its travel advice later today.
