Fire spreads nears LA suburbs

(30 September 2005)

A small wildfire, which started on Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley some 50km (30 miles) northwest of Los Angeles, developed very quickly forcing hundreds of people to leave their homes.
The blaze has already destroyed 6,800 hectares (17,000 acres) of land but so far only one house has been destroyed.
Some 3,000 firefighters have been involved and eleven helicopters are pouring water and fire retardant on the flames to contain their advance. Suburbs evacuated include Chatsworth, Oak Park and Lake Manor. However, more people could be asked to leave their homes if the blaze continues to spread.
