Political Unrest

Peru's Government Sacked by President

(12 August 2005)

Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo has sacked all the government ministers after the country’s Prime Minister Carlos Ferrero resigned over a disagreement with Toledo. Ferrero quit following Toledo’s appointment of one his close allies as foreign minister whom Ferrero viewed as a divisive figure. The pair also disagreed over Toledo's decision to make coca production legal in some areas, a move Ferrero feared would lead to increased cocaine production in the country. Toledo, already unpopular with the people of Peru, could now face further calls for his resignation which may lead to street protests and the disruption of travel to and within the country. Visitors planning trips to Peru should monitor the situation for further developments.
