One-Third of Mumbai Flooded

(28 July 2005)

Since yesterday’s report on Gocoti, it’s now known that at least 430 people have died in torrential monsoon flooding in and around the city of Mumbia (formerly Bombay) in the state of Maharashtra in western India. Most of the casualties are from the city itself which has been badly affected by flooding with nearly one-third of Mumbai under water. Road travel is impossible in some areas and all flights in and out of the Mumbai’s airport have been suspended. City officials have estimated that there could be as many as 200,000 people stranded in offices and buildings that have been trapped there since the monsoon rains began on Tuesday. Weather forecasters are warning that the situation may yet worsen predicting that there could be another two days of rain to come.
