Scientists Warn of Bird Flu Pandemic

(04 July 2005)

At a meeting in Malaysia to address the global problem of bird flu, scientists have expressed their grave concerns that not enough is being done to avert a global pandemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is also calling on the governments of rich nations to allocate more funds to try to solve the problem stating that it is a problem that could reach far beyond Asia. The big fear is the possibility that the virus could mutate into a form that is more readily passed by humans. Regional spokesman for WHO, Peter Cordingley, stated that the impact of a human flu pandemic would be far greater than the Sars outbreak of 2003.
