Naval base attacked in Sri Lankan tourist port

(18 October 2006)

Tamil Tigers have carried out a suicide attack on a naval base in Galle, southern Sri Lanka.

At least two people died when two rebel boats exploded, damaging naval ships. Galle, which is popular with tourists, is now under curfew.

A local hotel manager told the BBC that his guests have remained indoors today.

The attack follows a suicide bombing on Monday which killed nearly 100 people, mostly sailors. Today's attack is the first in a tourist area.

Galle is around 100km (70 miles) south of Colombo, the capital. The city was badly affected by the 2004 tsunami.
