FCO advises against all but essential travel to Fiji

(29 November 2006)

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has amended its advice for travellers to Fiji and is now advising against all but essential travel to the country.

Increasing tensions between the Fiji government and the military have led to fears of a possible coup.

The Fiji military commander has issued a number of ultimatums demanding the government resign.

On 21 November, he announced that military action would be taken if his demands were not met by 4 December.

The Australian and New Zealand governments have issued similar warnings against travel to the Pacific state.
