FCO warns against travel to Bangladesh

(12 January 2007)

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised against all but essential travel to Bangladesh.

Dhaka International Airport remains open and flights are operating as normal for now. Travellers should check with their airline regarding flight arrangements and monitor the latest FCO advice.

On 11 January, the president declared a state of emergency and imposed curfews on Dhaka and other cities and towns from 2300 to 0500 each day until further notice.

This follows widespread civil unrest across Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka, which has resulted in up to 70 deaths and several thousand injured.

With general elections called for later in January, further demonstrations are expected.

The FCO believes there is a high threat of terrorism in Bangladesh.
