Tropical cyclone causes destruction in Mozambique
(22 February 2007)Tropical Cyclone Favio caused considerable damage as it swept through Mozambique, and the FCO is advising against travel to the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Wind gusts of up to 200kph (130mph) destroyed houses and uprooted trees and pylons. Travellers have been warned to stay away from low-lying coastal areas that may be affected by surging waves. The country was already suffering from severe flooding after terrential rains.
Travellers are advised to check with the FCO (website: www.fco.gov.uk/travel) for latest updates or contact the African Travel and Tourism Association (tel: 0845 430 1252; email: info@atta.travel).
