Easter Island statue vandalised

(26 March 2008)

A Finnish tourist has been accused of trying to steal an earlobe from an iconic moai statue.

Police on the Pacific island said a witness had seen him rip off the earlobe which then fell to pieces.

Marko Kulju could face seven years in prison and a fine if convicted under laws protecting the sacred statues.

The figures, representing Polynesian ancestors, are believed to be up to 1,000 years old.

Experts are studying the statue to see if it can be repaired.
