Mobiles approved for planes
(26 March 2008)The use of mobile phones on aircraft in European airspace has been given the go ahead.
UK regulator Ofcom has issued plans allowing airlines to offer mobile coverage on UK-registered aircraft.
Small mobile phone base stations, called pico cells, would generate a net of coverage in and around the aircraft.
The proposals are subject to the approval of the European Aviation Safety Agency who would need to check the equipment does not interfere with other aircraft systems.
