Thousands stranded at US airports
(10 April 2008)Thousands of airline passengers were stranded on Tuesday and Wednesday after American Airlines grounded planes to conduct emergency inspections.
The work was ordered after the Federal Aviation Administration found numerous examples of inadequate maintenance work.
Around 1,500 flights were cancelled at the airline's major hubs in Chicago, Dallas, New York, St Louis and Austin.
More cancellations are expected as work continues.
