Travellers turn to green as credit crunch bites

(16 July 2008)

British travellers are going green this summer by opting to holiday in Britain or take the train to Europe rather than fly to expensive, far-flung destinations.

Sales at green travel operator responsibletravel.com are up by 37% in 2008, with England its most booked destination. Flight-only countries like Kenya and China have fallen out of the top ten most popular destinations for customers.

Eurostar also reported surging demand during the first half of 2008, with many travellers opting to take the new high-speed link from St Pancras to the Continent instead of flying.

Over 4.6 million travellers have used Eurostar so far this year, an increase of 18.3% for the same period last year.

Eurostar trains are carbon-neutral, and therefore their fares have been unaffected by the rising oil prices and taxes which have forced airlines to put up ticket prices.
