Ryanair cancels passenger tickets

(12 August 2008)

Thousands of Ryanair passengers will lose their seats after the airline announced it is cancelling tickets booked through price comparison websites.

The no-frills carrier will only accept online bookings made through its own website from Monday, and is prepared to turn away passengers at the check-in desk who have booked elsewhere.

Ryanair say that the third party sites make it impossible for the airline to contact passengers directly, so the airline has been unable to contact those whose tickets have been cancelled.

The first many passengers will know about the cancellation is when they arrive for check-in.

The airline is in dispute with price comparison websites who they claim force passengers to pay a commission on top of normal Ryanair fares.

The budget carrier says bookings made through these sites are against Ryanair's terms and conditions.

Ryanair say that they will refund the fare of any cancelled tickets, but not any commission paid to the third party websites.
