Britons stay at home for August Bank Holiday

(22 August 2008)

The credit crunch and the increasing cost of travel have caused a sharp decline in the number of Brits heading abroad for the August Bank Holiday.

Around 10.8 million Britons are planning on holidaying within the UK, with half of those planning on staying in their own country.

The August Bank Holiday long weekend is traditionally the last chance for holidaymakers to head abroad before schools reopen.

However, the 2 million Britons heading to ports and airports will be outnumbered more than five to one by those holidaying within the UK, according to figures released by VisitBritain.

Tom Wright, chief executive of VisitBritain said, “Whatever happens with the weather, there is plenty that can be enjoyed along the coast, out in the countryside or on a city break whatever your age or interest.”

The figures come after reports that Britons are rediscovering the delights of a domestic break in a bid to take cheaper holidays.
