Mushroom soup leak causes Ryanair emergency

(28 August 2008)

A Ryanair jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger suffered an allergic reaction to a jar of leaking mushroom soup.

The incident, on a flight from Budapest to Dublin on Wednesday night, came as ground staff from the airline were dealing with an emergency on another flight to Spain.

The Barcelona bound plane made an emergency landing in France after losing cabin pressure and descending 11,200m (37,000ft) within minutes without explanation.

The latest problem occurred over German airspace when a passenger complained of a swollen neck and choking after the soup dripped on him from an overhead compartment.

The pilot and crew decided to divert the plane to Frankfurt-Hahn airport where emergency services treated the passenger, before continuing the flight.

British holidaymakers have been caught in a series of mid-air emergencies this week.

A Thomsonfly flight was forced to abort a flight to Gatwick after a fire broke out in a gallery oven, while a Thomas Cook flight made a “precautionary” landing in Portugal after suffering engine trouble.
