Tate to set sail
(04 September 2008)This year has seen Tate hit a new high in its acquisitions, with new pieces being valued at £63.1 million being taken into its collection. Now Tate has set its sights on global domination and has decided to take to the waters in order to expand its reach.
In a three-year deal with P&O the art conglomerate has established a scheme called Tate Cruises, which aims to educate passengers floating around the Mediterranean and the Baltic with a series of lectures from Tate experts.
'It is a good opportunity to develop new audiences', said the Tate's director of media, Will Gompertz, who added that 50% of those on board the inaugural Tate cruise had never visited the galleries, but now intended to do so.
