Earthquake hits Balochistan province in Pakistan

(29 October 2008)

Over 160 people have been killed following an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude in the Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan.

Officials are expecting the death toll to rise.

The quake occurred 70km (45 miles) north of Quetta at 2309 GMT on Tuesday at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).

Many houses collapsed or were damaged by the landslides that ensued. The mountainous area is sparsely populated and has a poor infrastructure, making it difficult for aid to reach where it is needed.
