Iceland sees 20% increase in visitors
(11 November 2008)Following the recent economic turmoil in Iceland, visitor numbers from the UK and Nordic countries have increased.
In September, there was a growth of 20% in British people travelling to Iceland.
Opportunistic tourists are enjoying the favourable exchange rate. The US Dollar currently buys 129.64 Icelandic Krona, compared to kr83.94 at the start of September. Today, Sterling will buy kr208.95, compared to kr156.35 earlier this year.
This has led to cheaper accommodation and amenities for tourists – a night in a four-star hotel can cost just US$70 (£45), compared to an average hotel rate of $230 (£148) in April.
