Aldi to launch travel website

(12 November 2008)

Discount supermarket chain Aldi is to expand into the UK travel market. Aldi Travel (www.alditravel.co.uk) will launch in January with city, beach and ski break deals.

Aldi Travel expects to attract 250,000 customers annually and will promote its offers with leaflets in its 400 UK supermarkets. According to the Times Online, prices will be low thanks to the sheer volume of customers Aldi can offer to hotels desperate to fill rooms left vacant as a consequence of the current financial crisis.

Travel is not an entirely new venture for Aldi. The company has been in the travel market since 2005 in Austria, where it is now the country's second-biggest tour operator.
