Edinburgh's UNESCO status in question

(12 November 2008)

Edinburgh may lose its World Heritage status, following the city council's decision to pass controversial planning applications.

Two UNESCO inspectors are arrived in the city on Wednesday to tour the developments that are causing concern. They include the Caltongate in the Old Town and the redevelopment of the St James shopping centre.

Edinburgh was granted the title in 1995. The findings will be discussed at the UNESCO summit in Seville next year.
