Brisbane hit by worst storm in 25 years

(17 November 2008)

Storms have hit parts of Queensland on Australia's east coast killing one man, destroying homes and leaving over 200,000 properties without power.

Hail, torrential rains and strong winds attacked the state capital, Brisbane, and popular tourist areas of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

In the worst-hit areas, most of the trees over 10m (33ft) were snapped in half and residents described the area as looking like a 'war zone'.
