Winds ease but homes still threatened by wildfires

(17 November 2008)

Wildfires blazing in southern California died down slightly on Sunday as the hot, gusting winds that drove the fires eased. The change in weather conditions meant fire fighters were able to create fire breaks and use aircraft for aerial assaults.

Wildfires have affected over 200,000 acres of land in the Los Angeles area, Montecito and Orange County. One thousand houses, from mansions to mobile homes, have been destroyed and an estimated 50,000 residents were evacuated. Over half of those who fled their homes have now been allowed to return but officials expect it to be days before the fires are extinguished.

The resulting air pollution has led to the cancellation of some outdoor events, including a marathon in Pasadena.
