Mumbai siege over

(01 December 2008)

The massacre in Mumbai ended after a commando raid on Saturday morning.

Ten gunmen killed at least 174 people and injured 294 before they were stopped. Only one was captured alive; the others were all killed. They arrived in the city by boat on Wednesday.

India's security was raised to 'war level' on Sunday, following the prime minister's announcement that the government would double the size of the country's anti-terrorist units.

Home minister Shivraj Patil resigned, saying that he was taking 'moral responsibility' for the attacks.
