New Capitals of Culture for Europe

(28 December 2008)

Vilnius in Lithuania and Linz in Austria will take over from Liverpool and Stavanger as Europe's new Capitals of Culture for 2009.

The title, now financed by the Culture 2000 programme, began in 1985, with Athens the first European City of Culture.

Rebranded as Capital of Culture in 1999, two cities now share the title each year.
