Airline industry urges approval of Heathrow expansion
(12 January 2009)Plans to build a third runway at Heathrow are being supported by unions and business leaders.
The Future Heathrow Group has taken out newspaper adverts stating that the expansion is essential for the British economy's long-term competitiveness. It argues that other major airports in Europe have already expanded and are therefore prepared to take advantage when the market recovers.
The union Unite said the modernisation of Heathrow would both safeguard and create jobs in construction and services.
BAA, the airport operator, believes the new runway is required in order to meet passenger demand.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to approve the plans this week, even though around 50 Labour MPs oppose them. Residents and environmental protesters also continue to fight the proposal.
