Protestors buy up Heathrow land
(14 January 2009)Protestors determined to stop plans to build a new runway for Heathrow Airport have bought the land earmarked for the expansion.
The group of environmentalists, scientists and actors, including Emma Thompson and Alistair McGowan, bought the plot and has promised to divide it into hundreds or thousands of smaller parcels to sell to environmentalists around the world.
The organisation currently has 5,000 supporters that have signed up to be co-owners of the plot, in order to slow down any initial legal proceedings.
The government is expected to make a final decision on the third runway this month.
