Longer queues possible at US ports of entry

(19 January 2009)

The US Department of Homeland Security has introduced new rules requiring collection of biometric data from more passengers.

As of 18 January, fingerprints will also be collected for permanent residents of the USA, arrivals seeking admission on immigrant visas, people seeking refugee or asylum status and most foreign visitors.

The US Customs and Border Patrol said the changes could increase waiting times at some ports of entry. Staff levels will be increased if necessary.
