BAA ordered to sell three airports

(19 March 2009)

BAA has been told by the Competitions Commission to sell off three of its airports within two years.

After a two-year inquiry, the commission's final report orders BAA to sell Gatwick, Stansted and either Glasgow or Edinburgh. The sale of Gatwick Airport is already under way and the buyers of the airports must be approved by the commission.

Christopher Clarke, Chairman of the BAA inquiry, said: "We are confident that the sale of these airports will bring substantial benefits to passengers and airlines."
