Swine flu threat level is raised

(28 April 2009)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) raised the pandemic threat level for swine flu from three to four last night after the first cases of infection were confirmed in Britain and Spain and the number of cases in the USA doubled.

Level four (out of a possible six) means the virus is showing sustained ability of human-to-human transmission and is able to cause community-level outbreaks.

WHO top official Keiji Fukada said today that the virus can no longer be contained and advised countries to focus on mitigating its effects.
