World prepares for a pandemic as death toll rises

(29 April 2009)

Leaflets about the swine flu outbreak and preventative measures are to be sent out to every household in Britain within the next few days after the World Health Organisation (WHO) called on all governments to prepare for a pandemic.

The move comes as more countries have confirmed cases of infection, including New Zealand and Israel, and the virus is thought to have killed nearly 160 people in Mexico.

More than 30 million masks are being ordered by the UK Department of Health, mainly for health care professionals, despite concerns the masks do little to prevent the spread of flu among the general public.

Anyone who feels flu-like symptoms and may have been in contact with someone who has been to one of the infected areas, is advised to stay at home, drink plenty of water and take paracetamol.

Anyone concerned about swine flu and its potential symptoms should contact their GP or NHS Direct on (0845) 4647.
