EasyJet proposes in-flight weddings
(08 May 2009)EasyJet announced they want to hold marriage ceremonies on their flights in the near future.
The no-frills airline company is awaiting permission for its pilots to officiate the weddings.
But before the mid-air marriages can take place, easyJet will have to overcome some legal difficulties.
Heather Dsenisi, Southampton Registry Office's deputy registrar, said: "British marriages have to be conducted in a licensed building, which has to be a permanent structure that doesn't move, and the ceremony has to be officiated by a minister of religion or by a registrar employed by the local council."
Paul Simmons, easyJet's UK regional general manager, is undeterred by the prospect of planes flying themselves. "We're excited about these plans. If there is the opportunity, our pilots could be marrying couples in the air," he said. "After their marriage at a height of 30,000ft, they can go directly on their honeymoon."
