Cheaper meals after France slashes VAT
(26 May 2009)British travellers will be able to dine and drink for less in France this summer, after the French government approved new tax cuts.
From 1 July, sales tax on restaurants and cafes in France will be reduced from 19.6% to 5.5%, which means that the cost of meals could be reduced by about 10%.
Didier Chenet, head of France's hotel, restaurant and cafe union (Synhorcat), said: "Clients will now be able to enjoy a full meal with a 5.5% VAT rate."
