Gatwick loses New York flight

(02 June 2009)

Air passengers will no longer be able to fly direct from London Gatwick airport to New York's JFK airport.

British Airways, the only airline still flying the route, is dropping this service from October 2009.

BA's Gatwick-to-New York flight has been running for over a quarter of a century, but like fellow airlines Virgin Atlantic and Zoom, who also cancelled the route, the airline has failed to make it profitable.

BA will use this Gatwick vacancy to launch flights to the Maldives and the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
