Child survivor found in Yemeni plane crash

(30 June 2009)

A child was rescued alive and is the first survivor from the Yemeni jet, which crashed into the Indian Ocean with 153 passengers on board, according to carrier Yemenia.

The wreckage of the Yemeni airliner, which went down in severe weather conditions near the Comoros Islands in the Mozambique Channel, has been located, and bodies have been sighted in the surrounding water.

The Airbus 310 flight IY626 was flying from the Yemeni capital Sanaa to the Comoros capital Moroni. Amongst the passengers feared dead, 66 held French citizenship.

French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau said: "They are saying the plane was making its approach, that it pulled out of the approach and then tried another approach that went wrong."

This is the second big tragedy to hit French air travellers this month. On 1 June, 61 French passengers and 11 French crew were killed when an Air France aircraft flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the Atlantic.
