Chicago skyscaper unveils 103rd-floor glass box
(03 July 2009)The Sears Tower skyscraper in Chicago has unveiled new "glass balconies" which allow visitors to its 103rd-floor ‘Skydeck' to challenge their vertigo.
Not for the faint-hearted, ‘The Ledge' is a "five-sided glass box" - with transparent walls, floor and ceiling - jutting out 1.2m (4ft) from the tower and allowing tourists to experience being suspended more than 400m (1,300ft) above the ground.
Officials said the 38mm- (1.5-inch-) thick glass used for the balconies can hold up to five tonnes and is completely safe.
