British passport fees rise to £77.50

(08 July 2009)

British passports will cost £77.50 from September.

The hike in fares, which will rise from £72 to £77.50 for adults and from £46 to £49 for children on 3 September, is the result of a severe slump in travel demand, say the British government and the Identity and Passport Service.

Consumer groups are criticising the rise, saying holidaymakers are being "penalised".

Bob Atkinson, travel experts at TravelSupermarket.com, said: "I am not surprised the price keeps on going up, but the fact that it has risen once again by above inflation - just when we need to promote travel and support the aviation industry - seems to penalise holidaymakers."

In 2005, a new passport cost £42. The new price will mean an 85% rise in four years.
