British school boy drowns in Thailand

(13 July 2009)

A British school boy was sucked to his death after lifting a grille at the bottom of a pool in Thailand.

Nathan Clark, 14, was searching for his lost goggles when he was sucked into the pipes at the Pattaya Water Park, 137km (85 miles) east of Bangkok.

The boy's father, Jim Clark, dived in after him after being alerted by his eldest son Rhys, 15, but found no trace of Nathan.

The concerned parent immediately alerted staff at the water park, but said lifeguards at the pool thought it was a joke.

"The guards did nothing, not for 30 minutes," said Mr Clark. "They would not believe what had happened. When I finally forced them to do something they went to the pump room, opened a hatch and my son's body came out."

Mr Clark and his sons, from the Isle of Man, and his Thai wife were enjoying a family holiday before moving to New Delhi in India.
